On Thursday, June 17, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, which establishes June 19 as the federal holiday, Juneteenth. Juneteenth (a portmanteau created by combining the words “June” and “nineteenth”), celebrates the day in 1865 that all black Americans finally received official notice from United States Army Major General Granger that “all slaves are free,” when the message was finally delivered to Galveston, Texas after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, almost two and a half years earlier. Your TWU/JetBlue IFC Negotiating Team (NT) continues to receive alarming reports from IFCs regarding the EWR Co-Base. We have received reports of ASB assignments that cause IFCs to use public transportation alone, late at night and early in the morning; rideshares that cost over $100; and long days without an adequate place to rest. In particular, many of our Reserve IFCs are facing fear and anxiety that is completely unnecessary. Read more
“Civil Rights are Human Rights” is a concept deeply rooted in the foundation of the Transport Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO (TWU). Social change often starts with pain, outrage, and action from marginalized groups. Pride is no different. We celebrate Pride in June to honor the Stonewall Uprising, which took place in June of 1969, and we want to celebrate and uplift our LGBTQIA+ community, while we continue the fight for respect and equality.
In spite of the progress that we have made toward full equality, it important to remember that the fight is not finished. As we celebrate Pride, this is a great opportunity for action. The Equality Act would amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act to prevent discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The Equality Act would provide anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQIA+ Americans in employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces & services, federally funded programs, and jury service. Currently, federal law does not explicitly provide non-discrimination protections based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
This bill has been passed in the House but remains stalled in the Senate. TWU supports our LGBTQIA+ members, and we ask you to please contact your U.S. Senators for support of this legislation. The LGBTQIA+ community and youth have been denied the basic dignity and respect the Equality Act would correct. Pride At Work is the LGBTQIA+ AFL-CIO constituency group who is leading the fight for workers on this important issue. Use this form on the Pride at Work website to call your Senators. While you are there, you can also join Pride At Work at the national, state, or local chapter to continue fighting LGBTQIA+ discrimination at every level in your own community with like-minded union members.
While we continue our fight against COVID-19, Pride parades across our country have been canceled or rescheduled for later in the year. Check your local Pride website to see how you can attend virtually or in person this year. We cannot wait to celebrate with you at future Pride Parades. In the meantime, fly your Pride flags high or attend a virtual event and celebrate!
